Vous trouverez ci-dessous un podcast sur les médecins engagés dans le mouvement écologiste, an Earth Hour update, a clothing exchange from Wild Child PEI, Outdoor Leader Training, SMR-waste news, and coverage of Sierra Club Canada in The Pointer and the Penticton Herald. But first...

In December we warned that Trump’s new 2025 'National Security' Strategy declared U.S. plans to use private sector influence erode Canadian sovereignty. The strategy mentions the oil and gas and tech sectors in particular as tools for expanding U.S. influence and specifically declares climate action in other countries to be a threat to U.S. dominance. All the more reason to take climate action if we want sovereignty, but U.S. influence is working.

“The U.S. wants to achieve energy dominance. We support you in that view… [as] Fortress North America” Tim Hodgson, the Canadian Energy Minister recently told the U.S. Regarding Trump's U.S. tech billionaire friends wanting to build out AI data centres: “We can provide [the] gas,” Hodgson said. Our government is now trying to ship more oil to the U.S. via a Keystone XL revival. They even admit they have no intention of selling less to the U.S. but simply deflect critique by promising illusionary demand for oil elsewhere. We warned this was what oil interests really wanted: to tie us even further to the U.S. The four companies that represent 80% of Canadian oil sands production are 60% American-owned. They are sending a large share of their profits to their shareholders in the United States, even as they lobby to weaken Canadian climate policy and hold back renewable energy here in Canada.

Thanks to big oil and gas' influence, our Federal Government’s plan is now to:

  1. Help the U.S. Government and their AI tech billionaire friends torch the climate, causing more out of control wildfires, so they can generate AI slop and disinformation (to be used against Canada) via water-wasting, gas-powered, data centres.
  2. Trust oil and gas corporations and FURTHER INTEGRATE OUR ECONOMY with the U.S.

All of this instead of going renewable - and yes it is instead of going renewable: The National Observer, just today, reports "Ottawa's 'one-stop shop' for companies seeking clean-tech support" is being cut. That's just one of the many ways public sector cuts that could undermine community ability to get ahead on renewable energy as well as undermine our ability to "prevent oil spills from becoming catastrophes" and ensure "dangerous goods don't explode on our railways.”

Again, polling shows 58% of Canadians say transitioning away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy (entirely possible) is more important than ever, in light of U.S. aggression (only 11% say less). Take action: call your MP and cabinet ministers and demand a renewable future rather than oil and gas expansion. Say no to gas for AI billionaires, say no to a Keystone XL revival, and say no to Fortress North American and U.S. energy dominance.

AND GO WARN OTHER PEOPLE: Share this newsletter or just talk to others & share social media posts. But get the word out.

Call Your MP: Say no to gas for AI billionaires, say no to a Keystone XL revival, and say NO to Fortress North American and to U.S. energy dominance.

Our situation brings to mind a warning from George Orwell in Animal Farm that even governments with the best of initial intentions can become the thing they claim to prevent (a warning that we must always hold leaders to account):

"Four legs good, two legs better."

"Canadian sovereignty good, Fortress North America better," must not become a legitimate idea.

Indeed, the Federal government is cutting services that help defend our sovereignty from the sort of communications and oligarchical attacks the U.S. is likely to keep using against Canada. Government is cutting diplomatic capacity vital to disconnecting from the U.S., cutting our ability tax billionaires, and ignoring completely options to strengthen services in ways that also help us improve local sustainability, resilience, and sovereignty.

All this sets us up to become more like a version of the U.S. that led - inevitably - to oligarchy. None of this is strategic, pragmatic, or practical, You can't win against U.S. oligarchy by letting oligarchy in through the back door. All the defence spending in the world doesn't matter in that case because you have misjudged how the U.S. influence strategy works.

The warning signs were there, and we pointed them out early on. The claims this was all '4D chess' just didn't match the details. As we wrote in December 2025 there was:

  • The Prime Minister taking speech ideas from billionaire-founded ‘Build Canada’ linked to oil and gas interests and tech entrepreneur Tobias Lütke – who famously said Canada should not ‘hit back’ in response to U.S. tariffs and characterized Trump’s demands as reasonable. The government went further embedding 50 corporate leaders in key government roles on the advice of the pro-big oil, pro-big tech, ‘Build Canada.’
  • The unnecessary scrapping of climate policies, for a likely to be useless industrial carbon price in Alberta, including the weakening of anti-greenwashing laws that simply prevented oil and gas corporations from lying and helped to safe-guard our democracy.
  • The Federal Government’s decision to add the U.S.-owned Ksi Lisims LNG project - a project backed by friends of Trump - to its list of major projects. [March 2026 update: the U.S. backers of that project now seem to want public subsidies for it from the Federal Government - something that would VERY unpopular].
  • The rumours that within Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) that criticism of oil and gas’ economics has been silenced.
  • NRCan’s failure to answer journalists’ questions on sustainable jobs.
  • The NRCan cuts that will harm our ability to protect Canadians from floods and wildfires.

The industrial carbon pricing provisions under the Pipeline MOU will likely not be decided in time for April 1st deadline and big oil is still attacking industrial carbon pricing despite the MOU (who could have guessed). An agreement on methane with Alberta represents delayed action and more vague promises of future finalization. Ottawa also just agreed to subsidize Equinor's Bay du Nord oil project to the tune of $1 Billion - despite a 16% chance of a serious oil spill & Equinor's profits - all to keep the illusion of oil expansion afloat.

It's scary to witness just how quickly oil and gas interests can corrupt systems (I wish I wasn't writing this). It's scary to realize we must hold government to account while also fixing whatever we can on our own, because there are no magical heroes coming to save the day - except the hero you become when you work together, speak with others, and call leaders out.

Get Ready for Earth Hour

Earth Hour will take place this Saturday, March 28th, 2026 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm your local time. What started as a lights-off event in Australia in 2007, has now flourished into an annual day of significance organized by the World Wildlife Fund in efforts to raise awareness for climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental sustainability.

It’s also a way to give Earth 1 full hour to breathe – a small moment in time, but a big ask. We’re asking our Sierra Club Canada family to do the same! The goal is to switch off non-essential lights to reduce as much energy consumption as you possibly can. Take this hour to stargaze, host a candle-lit diner, take a walk in a nearby park or find a personal way to connect to this purpose. If you want to find out more about Earth Hour, please check out their website.

Energy and Climate News from Our Community Energy Showcase

The latest climate and energy headlines from our joint Community Energy Showcase with The Energy Mix, an important source for reliable information in a world filled with misinformation.

  • Does SMR Stand for Spending Money Recklessly? By Susan O'Donnell, M.V. Ramana:

"What did Canadians get for the $4.5 billion in public funding spent on small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) activities? Our new report assessing SMR development in Canada found the results underwhelming, to say the least.... each unit of electrical energy from SMRs would be far more expensive that a corresponding unit from solar and wind power plants, even when the cost of storage technologies and other means of accounting for renewable energy’s variability are included."

Read our related fact sheet on why batteries make new gas plants, SMRs, obsolete.

  • Small U.S. Charity Ramps Up Efforts to Deliver Portable Solar to Ukraine (pictured) by Gaye Taylor:

"As Ukraine seeks to insulate itself from Russia’s attacks on its centralized energy system with rooftop solar and wind turbines, Hope for Ukraine is working to provide immediate energy security to the country’s most vulnerable households, one solar resilience kit at a time."

Countering Climate Misinformation

As part of our ongoing campaign to counter environmental misinformation we're creating a dedicate space in our newsletters from now on just for fact sheets you can use to help counter the lies being spread by oil and gas lobbyists. Again facts only work when you are also connecting personally when talking to people through stories and common concerns.

Resources on how to communicate with others:

  • How to Talk to Family & Others About Climate Change (updated for 2026).
  • More on talking with neighbours, friends, and family on climate issues (webinar recording).
  • Effective Communications on Climate Change (podcast).
  • Visual communications advice on wildfires (webinar recording).

Facts Sheets:

  • Wind Power Fact Sheet.
  • Electric Vehicle Fact Sheet.
  • Why Canada Can Go 100% Renewable.
  • Emissions Cap Fact Sheet.
  • Wildfire fact sheet on causes and links to the oil and gas industry.
  • Carbon Pricing Fact Sheet.
  • How the Carbon Tax Got Alberta Off Coal and Could Reduce Future Wildfires (Podcast).
  • Facts on Heat Pumps.
  • Canada’s forests haven’t absorbed more carbon than they’ve released since 2001.
  • It isn’t arson: untangling climate misinformation around Canada’s raging wildfires & climate crisis made spate of Canada wildfires twice as likely, scientists find.
  • CO2 is a pollutant in the case of climate change and human caused CO2 causes climate change – it’s not just 'plant food.'
  • More on other common climate myths.

Talking with others is the biggest impact you can have but be sure to prioritize talking to those on the fence about the seriousness of the climate crisis (unfortunately not everyone is open to listening). Call out oil and gas CEOs in the process!

We're stronger together. Go cause trouble.
