Your Message
Dear Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ministers of Finance and National Revenue, Energy and Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, and Canadian Identity and Culture, I am writing to call on you to reinforce anti-greenwashing legislation in Canada and to implement the emission cap without delay. I was deeply concerned to hear of your plans to weaken, or even abandon, this legislation during the Budget 2025 announcement. I am not alone and over 90% of Canadians stand with me in wanting greenwashing legislation to be effective (1, Angus Reid Forum). 72% of Albertans wish to maintain or increase federal climate action and action to transition the country to clean energy (2, Abacus Data - June 2025). Survivors of wildfires and floods in Canada travelled to Ottawa last year to call on you to enact the emissions cap, I will not ignore their call and I am surprised you would (3). Further, neither greenwashing legislation nor the emissions cap hurt Canada’s competitiveness, they reinforce it. How are we going to tell which projects are truly in the national interest if corporations are not required to tell the truth about their environmental records? Oil and gas corporations should have to report on their environmental records, but that reporting is useless if it does not meet international best standards for being truthful. We do not need a media ecosystem filled with misinformation, we need reliable information if they are going to make arguments for their projects. More information is not better than less if that information is garbage, and it’s vital for Canadians’ health that we know the truth. “Residents of Kitimat, B.C., say LNG Canada’s operations are leaving them exhausted and worried for their health” as The Narwhal reported recently (4), there are already increased reports of respiratory problems linked to flaring as a “plume of black smoke rises from LNG Canada.” Oil and gas corporations have a well documented - decades long history - of purposefully lying to the public about climate change that continues to this day (5). They have shown they cannot be trusted. Their communications tactics are contributing to the degradation of democracies worldwide (6). Canada is already at risk of disinformation, we need strong greenwashing legislation not just to protect our climate but to protect our democracy. With democracy in the balance will you side with climate survivors or corporate climate-liars?
